Redo-Project 1-Part B

Resubmit:

Part b:

Circulation:

After the final presentation last Tuesday, based on the feedback from Ricci, I have modified something in my work for part b. Firstly, the color in previous drawing for 'circulation' is too complicated to show the different programmes in each plans of the villa. Therefore, I tried to reduce the kinds of color and change the color set to divices the buidling into three serious of spaces: public exterior; public interior and private. The colors have been used in each of these spaces have the same dominant hue and the depth of each color in one dominant hue shows which one is more public that the other or which one is more private.

Part a: to see

Precedent:Villa Savoye-Le Corbusier

Content: Promenade Architecturale

The reason why I choose this content to study in  this building is that the idea about "a machine for living" really capture my attention. Therefore, I decided to choose this idea which might best showing how a building could be designed for living as a HABITATION.

The "Promenade Architecturale" is a key term in the language of modern architecture and first appeared in Le Corbusier's description of the Villa Savoye at Poissy (1928).

The "promenade architecturale" refers to the observer's pathway through the built space - is a central element of Le Corbusier's architectural and city planning designs.

"The promenade would be designed to resensitise people to their surroundings leading ultimately to a realignment with nature.  It is the sequence of images that unfolds before the eyes of the observers as he or she gradually advances through the structure.

With the help of the 'architectural promenade , Le Corbusier created narratives of indoor and outdoor space, an initiation into the possibilities of architecture that unfolds as the visitor progresses. Architecture constitutes the space of processes of movement."
-Flora Samuel "Le Corbusier and the Architectural Promenade"

Chosen Part: Ramp

The ramp symmetrically located in the middle of the house. It is slowly progresses from the ground floor to the roof garden, in addition, it provides a horizontal progression through the house; in these ways, it allows slow movement and is parallel to the floor slabs. The ramp favours walking, it is what we can best see the unfolding of architectural arrangement by tripping on foot. In this house, there is veritable promenade architecturale.

The ramp connects between the public spaces between the floors and as the occupants move up the ramp, they can continue to view the surroundings, providing the experience of an architectural promenade; exploring time and revealing the successive perceptions of spaces.

Formal Devices:

Firstly, I wanna show the symmetry of this building, I have chosen one facade to expand this concept. As the drawing shows below, it could be divided in various ways, and each one could illustrated the idea of symmetry, in other word, it is absolute balance design in the facade. For example, in the drawing of the first level plan, based on the grid lines and diagonal lines of the square, the location of the ramp has been decided, and it is quite clear that it is in the centre of the building plan.

In addition, in the facade and the plan drawings, there are some areas have been circumscribed by golden rectangles, and by this way, it could be seen that how the building has been programmed. For instance, in the plan of the second level, two golden rectangles have been drawn, and according to these line, it might be quite clear to see how the edges of the terrace have been decided.
